cultivating community through music
"Music can name the unnameable and communicate the unknowable."
The Ensemble Druzhba was formed in 2016 by Busya Lugovier (viola), Michelle Lee Elliott (violin), and Derek Clark (cello). The ensemble gets its name from the Russian word for friendship: “Druzhba” (pronounced “Droozh-buh”). The Ensemble’s first iteration was as a string trio, formed from a common love of chamber music and its collaborative spirit. More recently, the trio invited more colleagues to join the core group and the trio renamed itself Ensemble Druzhba. In the 2018-19 season Ensemble Druzhba performances included wonderful collaborators: Kristina Guillion (violin), Harry Hindson (clarinet), and Paul Kovakovic (piano). The Ensemble has performed at Old Main in Galesville, WI, as well as at Annett Recital Hall at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse. Upcoming performances in the 2019-20 season include "Dark Night of the Soul" and "Luminous Night of the Soul" by Ola Gjeilo with the La Crosse Chamber Chorale; in November, the Ensemble will perform a special tribute concert to the Dubna Trio (of which Busya Lugovier was a founding member), celebrating thirty years of friendship between La Crosse and Dubna, Russia; this program will also be expanded upon in a collaboration with Mary Ellen Haupert on her “Out-of-Our-Minds” chamber music series at Viterbo University in March. The Ensemble will also perform Joaquin Turina’s “Scene Andalouse” on a “Faculty and Friends” recital at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse with pianist Mary Tollefson and violist Agnes Falter in February 2020.
